How Swimming Taught Me to Keep My Head Above Water in Life and Business

This is the story of how taking up swimming as a kid still helps me keep my head above water in the boardroom.

I’ve always felt at home near water. It gives me clarity, calm, and a reset when I need it most. Over time, it has shaped how I think, work, and lead.

Where It All Started

As a child, swimming wasn’t just a sport. It was a confidence-builder. Every dive into the pool helped me overcome fear, push limits, and stay focused under pressure. I didn’t know it then, but those early lessons would show up again and again in my career.

Swimming taught me discipline, resilience, and how to stay calm in deep water — both literally and mentally.

Lessons I Still Use Every Day

Water has always been a teacher. Here are some of the key lessons I carry with me into every room I step into.

Stress Management

Swimming clears the mind. The rhythm, the silence, the breathwork — it all creates space to think clearly. This practice of mindfulness is something I lean on in high-pressure work situations.

Time Management

Sticking to a swim routine as a kid required showing up early, often, and consistently. That structure taught me how to manage my time, balance responsibilities, and stay committed — traits that matter just as much in business.

Teamwork

Even though swimming can be individual, I spent years in teams and group lessons. We trained together, competed together, and supported each other. It showed me that success is often about collaboration, not just solo wins.

Problem-Solving

Swimming isn’t just physical. You’re constantly adjusting your technique, pacing, and mindset. Facing challenges in the water made me a better problem solver on land. Whether it’s making a quick decision or finding a creative solution, I learned to stay composed and find my flow.

Resilience

From conquering the deep end to perfecting new strokes, each small win built my confidence. That resilience carried over into my work life. Launching new ideas, facing setbacks, and leading through change all require the same inner strength.

The Bigger Picture

Swimming gave me more than just fitness. It gave me focus, drive, and a way to process challenges. Whether I’m diving into a new project or navigating uncertainty, I still carry that swimmer’s mindset.
